Knowing Animals

Knowing Animals is on a temporary hiatus, and will return in 2024. Knowing Animals is a free podcast featuring interviews with scholars about new research in animal studies. Guests include philosophers, historians, geographers, anthrozoologists, sociologists, literature scholars, and more. New episodes are released every other Monday. It is hosted by the philosopher Josh Milburn.

In this episode we are joined by Ruth Hatten. Ruth is a long-standing animal advocate who has worked as legal counsel for Voiceless, the animal protection institute. Ruth has also been involved with the Barristers Animal Welfare Panel. More recently, Ruth has established her own company in which she offers nutritional advice to people wishing to transition to a plant based diet, as well as complementally therapies for dogs and cats.

In this episode of Knowing Animals I am joined by Anne Fawcett. Anne is a vet and veterinary scholar at the University of Sydney. We will discuss Anne’s recent article ‘Application of Fraser’s “Practical” Ethic in Veterinary Practice, and Its Compatibility with a “One Welfare” Framework’. That article appeared in the journal Animals in 2018. We should acknowledge Anne’s co-authors Siobhan Mullan and Paul McGreevy.

This episode of Knowing Animals features Lynn Mowson. Lynn has a PhD in fine arts. Lynn helps manage the University of Melbourne’s Human Rights and Animal Ethics Research Network (HRAE). She also runs their monthly ‘Knowing Animals’ reading group and is Vice Chair of AASA. We discuss Lynn’s new book chapter. The chapter is titled ‘Making and Unmaking Mammalian Bodies: Sculptural Practices as Traumatic Testimony’. That chapter will appear in the upcoming book ‘Animaladies’ which is co-edited by Lorri Gruen and Fiona Probyn-Rapsey.
